semantics
The way we phraze completely completely changes the way we view what is being said. For example :"Is abortion ending pregnancy or killing a child?" This school of thought is effective in advertising for various things.

The power of metaphor
I wonder if Elvis Presley's songwriting was as planned out and smart as this speaker gives him credit for or if he is reading into it too much. Either way...this shows how ingrained metaphorical language is into the way we think and perceive....we do it without consideration.
Lanuage Interwoven with thought
I never really of exclamatory language as magical anyway before reading this article. But now that I think about it...it holds a certain power and resonance that other words may not. I never really understood the reasoning of media censorship until reading this. Whether or not I agree...I can articulate why these words have such a bite more so than I did before.

Glenn Ligon
I liked the fact that every decision made regarding "negro sunshine" was deliberate...from the words used to choice of stenciling to the neon sign itself. His work is very emotional, personal and well thought out.

manufacturing consent
Herman and Chomsky explain how propaganda functions in mass media. It is good for us to understand the mechanics so that we can further understand why we have such an urge to consume...or for those of us going into advertising...how we can utilize the propaganda model.
ART 21 consumption
"I think beauty embodies what we consider to be ugly as well as what we consider to be beautiful."
Well put.
Images and stereotypes are appropriated by the mass media and used to appeal to a certain group of people... whether it be blacks, whites, women, men, white men, gay men, lesbians, hispanics, poor people, rich people, children, fat people, skinny people..... You name it...they have a marketing technique to get you to buy their shit.

TED TALK ABOUT WORDPLAY IN DESIGN
The use of words is incredibly powerful. Substituting a single word can change the meaning, significance and power of an advertisement very quickly (reliable dutchmen vs. indonesian dutchmen) I don't understand the whole switching indonesian dutchman as making the argument to park your car in the garage less appealing...but i'm assuming he means it as a negative. Although I did not understand his example...I agree with his point thoroughly.

TED TALKS ABOUT INTUITIVE RESPONSE
Strangely enough....I would respond to this sign more strongly than to a new, freshly painted sign.
I found his comment about intuitive responses before text or meaning registers to be fascinating. For example...when he contrasted the two no parking signs... I had a MUCH stronger emotional response to the one written by hand. The bold and garish writing is much more expressive than typed text. Like he said... ask yourself which sign you would be less inclined to park in front of? using that logic I am surprised that designers don't take this into account more often.

jeopardy
I thought the whole ordeal was rather bizarre. I thought it was funny how they attempted to give Watson the robot a voice with some inflection. I feel like the outcome of the whole show was obvious. The one contestant and the robot both knew the answers the same amount of the time...but humans simply don't have the reflexes that robots do. I'll bet that it wasn't a coincidence that this game was being played for charity..........

TAZZZZZZZZZZZ
This is definitely an article that needs to be read more than once in order to fully understand it. But based on the information that I did gather, I will discuss.
Something that I do not remember reading about specifically is why is Temporary Autonomous zones are forming. I could make assumptions, though, that they form in places where authority is corrupt and/or neglectful. The photographs in the video that you sent us were rather incredible. There is just enough lack of authority that this TAZ can be formed but just enough regulation to keeps these areas as "Temporary" societies. What I am wondering is.... what constitutes these zones as temporary? What would give them the validity to be recognized as permanent?
The question of whether the internet is permanent or temporary relates to this and possibly even our assignment. Does something need to be physical, touchable to be permanent? Has the internet taken on a mind of its own? I would say that in a way it can probably function without human assistance (Machines are our ambassadors--the flesh is irrelevant except as a terminal) Is this author saying that we are not needed to oversee technology except to end it, or is the author saying that we will be ended by machines?
Regardless, it does seems to me that the net/web certainly can function in many ways without the assistance of people. I thought it was interesting how the author discussed the importance of the web to TAZs means of survival, but also how recognizing bodily/physical awareness is important as well.
In class we are creating virtual structure. We build looming sky scrapers and steel bridges with the tip of our little white mouse, only to have them dissipate in the flash of an eye, with the click of a button. Back to white, square one.

This is all I remember
Glow
Dusk on a
Hill at night.
Playground, knives and ropes
Shame and guilt.

What is your computer experience?
My name is Laura Rachel Weiner. My favorite color is turquoise and I am 4' 11". I enjoy food very much but I have a severe aversion to obnoxious chewing. I like to write creatively but do not do it well under a short time constraint . I can not think of a fifth sentence.
I have basic knowledge in photoshop and illustrator; I took the intro to illustrator and photoshop at Tyler a few years ago... and I know how to work the internet.
How do you feel about technology in the arts? Beautiful work can be produced but it can also make things "too easy" and generic
Favorite movie? NO FAVORITE but a favorite is Shallow Hall
Favorite book? no favorite but I like fight club
